Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands Pictures

We finally left Texas and headed to New Mexico we had been in Texas forever it felt like so good to get a new state under our belt. But we were still in the chihuahuas desert so still looks similar and of course extremely hot, we’ve been in 100+ degree heat now for over a week and the heat is really wearing on the crew.  We debated hitting Carlsbad Caverns when we were planning the trip but weren’t sure as it adds at least a hour to the drive. That morning we decided to go for it. It as a good stop and worth the time.  Overall drive wasn’t too bad and we got to see a lot of strange oil country..  Even though not considered a long drive day everyone was exhausted when we finally arrived at Oliver Lee State Park. The next day we braved the heat and hit up white sands for a bit. Of course it was too hot to stay out long but we got some sledding in and got completely covered in sand. Or  gypsum did you know the white sands was gypsum?  I didn’t but do now. Luckily it was a short stop so we had enough water for everyone to take a shower. I ran into town to get a oil change and then did a little solo hike up Dog Canyon i only went a little ways as it was 105 out and a steep climb so only did about a 1/2 mile of it. The trail gained a lot of elevation quickly and was pretty fun.  I was baking and used up all the one and.half quarts of water I took. All and all a good stop, next up the Grand Canyon.

Mouth of Carlsbad Caverns

You could take a elevator down the 800 feet but we hoofed it down the natural entrance. This is right before disaster struck Marcus. He got pooped on by a bird flying around the cave, and he was done with the cave before we even started. It was his brand new Lajitas shirt and has declared he’s never wearing it again. Super dramatic like that the rest of the tour. It was was a ton of poop when I helped him clean it up at the restrooms at end of the cave.  So I bought him a shirt just grabbed one at the gift shop down in the cave. He put it on and was a little snug I had grabbed a women’s and the curves didn’t work on him.  So Becky got that tshirt and I bought him another one at the gift shop above ground.

Camping spot at Oliver Lee State Park

Small trail by the visitors center on a hot tip from the attendant we walked up the canyon from the trail and rock scrambled along the stream and a lot of pools of water in the rocks.

Boardwalk trail at white sands, super hot and oppressive

You’d think we’d be used to it by now.  But no soooo hot.

I thought it’d be whiter, guess that’s farther in

Deeper in we found a good dune and tried our hand at sledding.

The sledding was fun but how I hate sand

Another shot of the campground from further up.
